John McCann, secrétaire-trésorier

John McCann immigrated to Niagara with his family in the early 1970's from Scotland. After Graduation he was hired as an apprentice Machinist and attained his Certificate of Qualification as a Skilled Tradesman in 1987.

John worked locally in the Trades while actively participating in the Labour Movement within Niagara. In 1996 he was hired on full time with Teamsters Union Local 879 as a Business Representative until 1999 when he was appointed to the position of Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Union Local 879.

John was elected to a five-year term as Secretary-Treasurer in 2002 and again in 2007. As the Secretary-Treasurer he is responsible for a Local which encompasses almost 6000 Rank and File members in almost 200 different workplaces in a large geographical jurisdiction stretching from Niagara west to London, North to Tobermory and east to Halton.

Effective January 1, 2009, John was appointed President of Local Teamsters Union 879.

John sits on a variety of Boards and Committees such as:

  • Trustee on the Teamsters Health and Welfare Trust Fund.
  • Trustee on the Teamsters and Participating Employers Pension Plan.
  • Director of the Armoured Car Division for Teamsters Canada.
  • Recording-Secretary for Teamsters Joint Council # 52.
  • Delegate to the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Human Rights Committee for Local 879.
  • Secretary-Treasurer of the Hamilton-Niagara Port Council.
  • Delegate to the Hamilton District Labour Council.
  • Delegate to the St. Catharines and District Labour Council.
  • Executive Board Member of Niagara Workforce Planning Board.
  • Labour Co-Chair of Niagara Workforce Planning Board.
